We are delighted to announce another fundraising success! A grant of £25,000 from funds raised by the players of the People’s Postcode Lottery has been awarded to us from The Postcode Local Trust.
The funding will help us to support people and prevent or reduce the impact of poverty in the communities that we serve. People who have been referred to us, who have health conditions that limit their mobility and prevent them from doing day to day tasks will often experience a reduction in income. Many people are not able to work or have an increase in costs due to their change in circumstances. They sometimes have limited or little family support nearby, becoming financially, socially and emotionally worse off as a result of their health condition.
Jayne Edwards, Manager, said, “As a Charity, Moorland Community Caring supports people who are impacted by the effect of poverty on their wellbeing, who find it difficult to live healthy lives. Financial hardship, including the recent cost of living crisis, coupled with pressures on the NHS, often results in a person’s health worsening. This grant will enable us to widen our impact and support more people.”
This award will pay for the salary of a part-time Well-being Co-ordinator. It will also contribute towards the running costs of our Moor Social activities, a vital community event for those experiencing social isolation. Each year these services support approximately 300 people who live in Ashburton, Bovey Tracey and Buckfastleigh and the surrounding villages.
Our Well-being programme which is delivered by our 2 part time Well-being Coordinators is individually tailored and helps to maximize income, connect people to support networks and advice, encourage self efficacy, build personal resilience and live well. Moor Socials activities are also run by our Well-being Coordinators with the dedicated support of a team of volunteers. These events have been described by people who attend as ‘a lifeline’. Helping people who are unable to leave their homes to maintain a connection to the community, create new friendships and have stimulating healthy activities. For more information you can visit our pages about the Well-being Programme and our Moor Socials.
To date, more than £1.3 Billion has been raised for good causes by players of the People’s Postcode Lottery which has helped thousands of charitable organisations and community projects throughout the UK. We’re proud to now join that long list of great causes being supported.
The funding will ensure that Moorland Community Caring continues to deliver its Well-being Programme – for the financial year 2024/25. Part of the programme is currently funded, by contract from Torbay and South Devon NHS Foundation Trust.
However it is unclear whether this contract will continue after September 2024.
Our Moor Socials are paid for from our own funds, made up of kind donations from local members of the public, community fundraising events and local council grants. We also ask those who attend to make a donation if they can afford to do so.
We have been actively fundraising this year, not only to prepare for a potential loss of income in anticipation of this contract not being renewed but also because the need for these services has steadily increased year on year, with client’s needs also becoming more complex.
We hope our fundraising efforts will help us sustain and develop our Moor Social activities, grow our small team of 2 part time Well-being Co-ordinators and to be able to recruit more volunteers to support the Well-being Programme as befriending and practical support volunteers. We would like to say a big THANK YOU to all the players of the People’s Postcode Lottery and the Postcode Local Trust.
